NAME: Sumire Yoshizawa
AGE: 16
CANON: Persona 5 Royal
CANON POINT: Post end-game.
CRAU: N/A
OTHER: N/A

SUITABILITY: My main plans with Sumire here are definitely to build CR and take part in events and player-run plots. Sumire spent much of her life practicing her gymnastics and crippled by her inferiority complex, which left little room for making friends, so I'm very excited to see her bloom and grow all manner of CR, both positive and negative, and to get her involved in things beyond just school and gymnastics. As for the sexual aspects of the game, Sumire will absolutely stumble and be flustered about it, but working through that will be part of her experience here, and she will adapt - after all, she's certainly seen stranger things.

HISTORY: Sumire is a young girl living in Tokyo, Japan. The younger twin to Kasumi Yoshizawa, she grew up in the shadow of her sister's excellence and kindness, developing an inferiority complex and crippling depression, though she never held it against her sister, and loved her dearly. When Kasumi was suddenly struck by a car and killed, saving Sumire in the process, this nearly destroyed her, her survivor's guilt combined with her pre-existing issues leading her to take on her sister's personality and identity in order to move forward. With the help of Takuto Maruki's persona her cognition was forcibly overwritten, and while she remained Sumire in reality, she believed herself to be her dead sister in order to cope with her crushing guilt and suicidal ideation.

After attending Shujin Academy, meeting the Phantom Thieves and discovering the metaverse, Sumire eventually uncovered the truth of her own identity, which led her to crisis, but she soon found the strength to recover and become her true self. Though she continues to struggle with mental health issues, she is now living as herself, carrying on in her sister's memory while also maintaining her own sense of self. Beside the Phantom Thieves, she participates in many battles and helps to take down Muraki, who has distorted reality in order to keep people from feeling pain, forcing them to live in a happy, yet fake, reality.

ABILITIES: Sumire is able to use a persona, which is a physical manifestation of one's inner self. Her persona, named Ella, allows her to use many different abilities, listed here. These abilities include many physical sword attacks, bless elemental attacks, party buffs and healing. She is also capable of using a rapier and a gun.

VICES:

Illness: It is difficult to sum up Sumire without discussing her crippling mental illnesses, for they have shaped so much of both her personality and her physical life. Even before Kasumi's death, Sumire suffered from rather severe depression and feelings of inferiority and worthlessness. To say she lacked-self confidence would be a gross understatement. Much of this was due to the fact that she grew in the shadow of her confident, cheerful, bold sister, always lagging just a little bit behind her, always failing to catch up with her - though in reality this was due only to her own lack of confidence. She tried too hard to emulate Kasumi, rather than simply allowing herself to excel as Sumire. Of course, once her sister passed she was plummeted into deep, dark grief with a large helping of survivor's guilt, and she became so despondent that she began to believe that if she could not live her life as Kasumi, and achieve her dream for her, then her life was not worth living. This all shaped her choices, and led her on the path that eventually saw her meeting the Phantom Thieves and, with their help, beginning to grow past her pain.

Self-Confidence: .. or lack-thereof, really. Sumire has little to no self-confidence at all most of the time, she often puts herself down and believes the worst of herself before even trying. This often results in self-fulfilling prophecies that tank her confidence even further. Oddly enough, however, in the metaverse, Sumire carries herself with much more elegance and confidence - perhaps because one must remove their "mask" and face their true self when controlling a persona and fighting in the metaverse. This is something she does struggle with when coming to terms with who she really is, at one point she even loses control of her persona and attacks the party before finally coming to her senses. By the end, however, her confidence while fighting and traversing the metaverse is certainly much stronger than her confidence in the real world, but this is something that she very much continues to struggle with.

Clumsiness: As a gymnast, Sumire is quite poised physically and socially much of the time, but perhaps due to her mixed cognition, this is not always the case, and despite her outwardly elegant appearance, Sumire can be quite clumsy, both with her body and her words. In some ways this was due to her delusional belief that she was Kasumi - her body did not behave as expected because she was not in fact who she thought she was - but much of it was also due to her lack of confidence, and how hard she attempted to emulate Kasumi, rather than being herself. This awkwardness manifested not only in her work as a gymnast, but it also carried over to her social life. Sumire is a sweet girl, but she is a bit conversationally clumsy, as she does not always know how she feels or what she wants, and her feelings of worthlessness tend to undermine her confidence. Though from her canon point she has overcome much of her physical clumsiness, she remains a little awkward socially.

VIRTUES:

Strength + Tenacity: First and foremost, and despite outward appearances - and even her own opinion of herself - Sumire is an incredibly strong person. She and her sister Kasumi started young on the path to be professional gymnasts, and while Sumire's lack of self-confidence kept her lagging behind her sister just barely, and while depression and inferiority chewed away at her, she never gave up on her path. She tried endlessly to emulate her sister's abilities, and even when she felt at her lowest, she continued to excel in gymnastics, even if she was not as good as she wanted to be. Her pain did not stop her, she simply kept pushing forward, trying and trying and trying. When Kasumi died and she was left in complete despair, this strength lapsed and she allowed herself to be swallowed by her delusions, but in the end, with a little help, she was able to overcome her trauma and learn to live as herself, as Sumire. While she was not without growing pains, she accepted her guilt and pain and stood up to move past it. Though her healing continues day to day, I find that pushing through such horrible grief and guilt shows immense strength.

Kindness: For all her depressive self-defeatism, Sumire is not an unkind girl. She loves her family deeply, and despite her envy of her sister she was unmistakably devoted to her - the two promised to becoming International champions side by side, and Sumire often cooked for her sister as well, who was not so sharp in the kitchen. Her love for her sister is clear in just how terrible her grief is when Kasumi passes. Though Sumire also does not make friends easily in the beginning, by the end of the game she is very fond of Joker and the other Phantom Thieves, working beside them without complaint and always ready to help.

Loyalty: Though Sumire is not confident in herself, she is incredibly confident in those she cares for, and even though she herself may be struggling, that will not keep her from fiercely defending them. She stands by the people she has come to love without exception and without regret, always willing to lend her time, or what strength she has, to them, no matter the cost. Even her sister, whom she felt always overshadowed her, was someone that she was always intensely loyal to, always supportive of, even she she herself felt as if she was not worth the time or attention, which is why losing her had been so devastating. Her bonds with the protagonist as well as the Phantom Thieves is strong, to the point that she was willing to give up on her own training in order to find evidence to free the protagonist from prison, if that is what it took. She is grateful for the help and support of her friends, and will happily pay it back without complaint.

SUIT REQUESTS:

Hearts: Given the roller coaster of emotion that Sumire experiences, Hearts would be a very fun choice for her. She certainly has a history of having her emotions easily manipulated, and though she's grown stronger and more resistant to it, this is still very much a weakness of hers, as she feels her emotions very strongly. I especially would enjoy playing with the romantic, loneliness, and infatuation aspects of the hearts suit, since she is a girl who can easily fall in love with people who treat her kindly and make her feel confident. Loneliness is also something she feels often, and is very weak to. Overall, she is a girl that experiences her emotions very keenly, so this would be a good fit for her to slip into, while also being fun for me to play.

Diamonds: Diamonds is an easy go-to for Sumire in order to help her overcome any nerves she might have about engaging with the setting. As a star gymnast, she is someone who is very, very in touch with her body and what is and is not normal for it, so having this upended and changed without her input would make for an interesting time. Desire for skinship is something that would prey on her easily, for physical closeness is not something she has much experience with, but would very much desire when it comes to any form of intimacy. I can easily find ways to make this suit work for her while having a good time with it, and it would lubricate her settling into the game quite nicely. Diamonds is also just a fun suit to play with overall!

Background Information: Wiki link!

Personality:

Content Warning for mental health illness and suicidal ideation.

Untangling Sumire's personality from that of her sister's is a complicated task, even for herself, but not entirely impossible. Due to a terribly tragedy in which Sumire inadvertently led her sister Kasumi to her death, her survivor's guilt and pre-existing depression and inferiority complex resulted in Sumire taking on her sister's personality, quite literally. With the help of Takuto Maruki's persona her cognition was forcibly overwritten, and while she remained Sumire in reality, she believed herself to be her dead sister in order to cope with her crushing guilt and suicidal ideation. Of course, her change was not perfect, and many aspects of Sumire leaked through her "Kasumi" guise, leading her to be rather a difficult character to unravel, however, as I will be playing her from the end of the game, where she has come to terms with her pain and returned to being Sumire, I will outline her characteristics as they are at the end of her canon development.

This is something she is beginning to work on, however.

In closing, Sumire is quite a complicated person, and even after she drops her Kasumi mask, she goes through rapid development near the end of the game, working first through deep anguish before finally beginning to change for the better, with the support of her friends. While she still makes missteps, and still lacks confidence, still harbors guilt, Sumire is truly beginning to grow into her own person, and take on her sister's dream for herself, for them both, for her memory, rather than simply out of guilt or obligation. She is learning to be herself again, and learning to be happy with that, day by day.

I also feel that the idea of a dream world and the dreamotion abilities will come easily and naturally to her, since it is not so unlike the metaverse - a "collective unconscious" world that exists in Persona 5. They are pretty similar ideas, so she should not have much trouble settling in and growing accustomed to her new lifestyle!
